Research carried out at the Department of Chemistry includes several distinct areas encompassing inorganic and organic chemistry, materials chemistry, analytical chemistry, chemical engineering, biotechnology, biochemistry and food science.
Research activities are performed within the framework of three main research units:
CESAM- Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies, associated laboratory (Centro de Estudos do Ambiente e do Mar – laboratório associado)
CICECO- Centre For Research in Ceramics and Composite Materials, associated laboratory (Centro de Investigação em Materiais Cerâmicos e Compósitos – laboratório associado)
QOPNA- Organic Chemistry, Natural and Agro-Food Products research unit (Unidade de Investigação Química Orgânica, Produtos Naturais e Agroalimentares)
